The Lansing Model Railroad Club owns the former Grand Trunk Western Railroad Millett Depot. The building was originally built in the 1890s and was active as a passenger station until 1955. LMRC obtained the use of the building in the late 1950's and constructed it's first layout therein. In the early 1960s, the GTW wanted to demolish the building to make room for the expansion of the adjacent Purina elevator. The railroad offered to sell the building to the club if the club moved it. The club obtained a donation of 1 acre of land from the R. E. Olds estate 1 block away on Old Lansing Road, and began fund raising to move the building. In September, 1963, the building was moved to it's present site. The building and layout were severely damaged in transit, and it took several years of work to restore the building and start a new layout. In the process, a basement was added under the building, and central heat installed. |
